Pinot Noir Central Otago New Zealand
Central Otago produces the new world's most distinctive and defined Pinot Noir, the vinification techniques at Quartz Reef are very much in keeping with the traditional practices of old world style. Bendigo is a new viticultural precinct of Central Otago, the largest quartz reef deposit in New Zealand runs directly beneath the vines. Established to industrial mining in 1862, the historic town of Bendigo is gaining new renown, this time for the most cogent and compelling vintages of Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir clones 10/5 and 5, 115 and 667, 777 and Abel are all hand picked off the closely planted, steep slope of Bendigo Estate vineyard. Parcels are kept separate throughout vinification, most of the fruit is de-stemmed, a small percentage of whole bunches are retained. Each individual vat is treated to a week of cold soak before indigenous yeasts begin to ferment naturally, peaking at 33°C. Gentle hand plunging throughout the vinifications, combined with post ferment maceration of up to twelve days achieves optimal extractions. Pressing is determined according to taste, directly into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels for malolactic and maturation, followed by egg white fining. Alcohol 14.0%
Deep bright red. Thyme and spiced wild berries on the bouquet. A chocolate and ripe dark cherry palate, vibrant with a concentration of sweet blue, red and black berry fruits, silky spice and bucolic characters over round and muscular, fine and long lasting, sweet glazed tannins. A generous and effusive Central Otago Pinot Noir of great texture and substance to accompany full flavoured meats or richly prepared Mediterranean style vegetables.
