Sandro Mosele is one of Victoria's most accomplished vignerons, his celebrated editions of Kooyong and Port Phillip estates are amongst the most cherished renderings of Burgundy styled Pinot Noir in the nation. Mosele has applied his art to a precious parcel of fruit, picked off a single, modest block of vine, grown to the fully fertile soils of a lamb and beef stud, on the brisk, maritime blown coastals of Gippsland South. This is not Pinot for profit, Walkerville represents an aesthetic appreciation of fruit from the farmer, invigorated by the blessings of providence and consecrations of local livestock. There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery. Both were ultimately auctioned off to the highest bidders and sown to vine. A third undeveloped site became the subject of a long running feud among the new and old neighbours. Dodgy invoices between the rivals were exchanged and the division of firewood became a further cause of contention. A truce was eventually called by the two protagonists, Brokenwood and Hungerford Hill, for the sake of healthy viticulture. The nascent blocks achieved international renown as the eminent Cricket.. Grapes are placed into open top fermenters and treated to a regimen of manual pumpovers before gentle pressing. Parcels which can best demonstrate upfront juicy fruit character with a juicy texture and velvety soft tannins are assembled into the final wine. Scaredy Cat is matured eighteen months in a selection of one year old French and American oak barriques, a component remains unoaked to retain vital fresh fruit character, the finished wine is bottled after minimal filtration.
Deep crimson red colour. Black forest cake with dark chocolate truffles on the bouquet intertwined by nettle, brambles and cassis aromas over an underlying aniseed and wild berry complexity. Lovely, fragrant blackcurrant and cedar flavours, fine tannins support the fruit and provide great extension through to the back palate. A lasting finish of currant, licorice seeds and eucalypt.
