In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Angas's great grandchild Ron Angas acquired cuttings from the Edelstone site and migrated the precious plantings to his pastures at Hutton Vale. Grapes are placed into open top fermenters and treated to a regimen of manual pumpovers before gentle pressing. Parcels which can best demonstrate upfront juicy fruit character with a juicy texture and velvety soft tannins are assembled into the final wine. Scaredy Cat is matured eighteen months in a selection of one year old French and American oak barriques, a component remains unoaked to retain vital fresh fruit character, the finished wine is bottled after minimal filtration.
Deep crimson red colour. Black forest cake with dark chocolate truffles on the bouquet intertwined by nettle, brambles and cassis aromas over an underlying aniseed and wild berry complexity. Lovely, fragrant blackcurrant and cedar flavours, fine tannins support the fruit and provide great extension through to the back palate. A lasting finish of currant, licorice seeds and eucalypt.
