Right next to the Merry Widow Inn at Glenrowan, infamous of Kelly gang folklore, Richard Bailey set up shop to service prospectors during the great Victorian gold rush of the 1860s. Rows of newly planted Shiraz soon followed and the Baileys released their first vintage in 1870. The region was ultimately infected by the terrible vine killing plague of the 1890s, a guarded blessing for Glenrowan, which elevated the quarantine status of its vitiated vineyards to a marque of the highest provenance. After founding Mornington's eminent Moorooduc Estate and decades crafting the most memorable vintages for Mornington's leading brands, Richard McIntyre established a tiny, single hectare vineyard, on a prominent, high elevation site at Arthur's Seat, with a view to producing limited yields of the most exquisite small batch wines. The techniques of choice are wild yeast ferments, minimal intervention and good French oak, with a nod to traditional Burgundian practices, which allow the wines to speak of provenance, express their specificity of clone and articulate their sense of place. Parcels of the choicest fruit, selected by Taylor Ferguson on the basis of full physiological ripeness, excellent varietal expression and defined regionality are vinified into an intense and flavoursome Brut Cuvee exhibiting attractive colour and fine effervescence. Light straw colour with fine persistent bead. Citrus and tropical fragrances on the bouquet, complexed by ripe stonefruits and slight toastyness. Lusciously ripe, lively fresh flavours on the mellow, elegant palate, crisp and clean with stonefruits, citrus and supple yeast expressions before a lingering, pleasantly dry finish.
