Established just eleven years after the founding of South Australia, the ancient vines in the Hundred Of Moorooroo were planted circa 1836 by the Jacob brothers, after accompanying Colonel William Light on the Seven Special Surveys expedition to populate Adelaide's north. Moorooroo endures as the nation's cardinal parcel of vine, the mother rootstock for many of the Barossa's most distinguished sites. For over a century, these sacred vines contributed fruit to the Orlando company, where they formed the backbone of countless spectacular historical vintages. Decimated by the government sponsored vine pull schemes of the 1980s, only four rows of these priceless vines were saved by master Ed Schild from complete annihilation. Adam Henkell established himself as a wine merchant in Mainz circa 1832, laying the foundation of today's Henkell & Soehnlein. As early as 1856, Henkell devoted himself to the production of popular sparkling wines. Following the creation of the Henkell Trocken label in the late 19th century, his grandson Otto transformed this delightful, sparkling cuvee into a highly esteemed marque that was enjoyed worldwide. Henkell Trocken has since became one of the great prestige brands, approachable to all, a must at every celebration and social occasion.

The term piccolo became a registered trademark in the early 1930s, and even today can only legally be used for the 0%2 litre bottling of Henkell Trocken.
