The mean gravelly soils and invigorating climes of Mount Barker of the Australian southwest, were identified during the 1960s by the world's leading viticulturalists, as a place uncannily similar to the great terroirs and clime of Bordeaux. The pioneering vines of Forest Hill were the first ever planted here, sired from rootstock of ancient Houghton clones, inaugurally vintaged by the illustrious Jack Mann in 1972. The Cabernet and Riesling of Forest Hill were promptly distinguished by multiple trophy victories and praised by gentleman James Halliday as the most remarkable wines to come out of the Australian west. Forest Hill have remained a source of the most.. Softly spoken wonders from the west»
The First Colonists to arrive in South Australia were brought to Kangaroo Island aboard HMS Buffalo in 1836. Sharing the journey was a veteran of the Royal Navy who had served aboard Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. Frank Potts was an accomplished sailor and carpenter, he built many of the young colony's structures and trading vessels. Six generations later, the Potts family's precious plantings of Malbec have been a key component in many of the nation's most memorable and invaluable vintages for decades. Sandro Mosele is one of Victoria's most accomplished vignerons, his celebrated editions of Kooyong and Port Phillip estates are amongst the most cherished renderings of Burgundy styled Pinot Noir in the nation. Mosele has applied his art to a precious parcel of fruit, picked off a single, modest block of vine, grown to the fully fertile soils of a lamb and beef stud, on the brisk, maritime blown coastals of Gippsland South. This is not Pinot for profit, Walkerville represents an aesthetic appreciation of fruit from the farmer, invigorated by the blessings of providence and consecrations of local livestock. Hugel sources Pinot Gris from the finest growers in Alsace, to be vinified around a backbone of estate grown fruit. Grapes are hand picked off vines, twenty five years of age, planted to clay and limestone soils on steeply sloped vineyards, within a dozen of the finer precincts around Riquewihr. Bunches are gathered in small tubs and treated to a gravity filled press, retaining the pristine qualities of grapes. Juices are decanted for a few hours before fermentation in temperature controlled barrels or vats at 18C to 24C. Components are racked upon completion and cold settled throughout winter for natural clarification. Batches are lightly filitered in the spring, bottled and sent to the Hugel cellars for maturation.
Intense lemon yellow hue. Alluring nose of orange and acacia, honey and apricots, almond and greengage, lightly smoked brioche. Perfectly dry palate offering an abundance of soft fleshy fruit flavours. Juicy, full bodied, a long lingering, textural finish. Drinking magnificently immediately upon release, Hugel matches well to richly sauced white recipes, veal and champignon or crayfish mornay.
