One of our nation's enduring winemaking dynasties, the Hamiltons planted vines just outside Adelaide in 1837. Great grandson Sydney Hamilton was a legendary and innovative viticulturalist, he ultimately made his own oenological conversion to the sacred Terra Rosa soils of Coonawarra in 1974, establishing one of Australia's most distinguished vineyards on a highly auspicious site, naming the property after forebear Lord Leconfield. An exceptional value for Cabernet of its class, presaged by a vigorously perfumed berry punnet nose, syrup textured, stately and refined, Leconfield makes a compelling.. Kalleske are one of our nation's most distinguished winegrower families, Barossa through and through, heirs to the tradition of Prussian pastoralists who established South Australia as one of the world's great viticultural precincts. The family Kalleske were the quiet achievers behind the stellar quality of fruit, at the heart of the most memorable vintages Penfolds Grange. Old sites and ancient vines, a tally of which have been branded under the Atze's Corner label, a regal range of stately Barossa wines, irresistibly underpriced in terms of provenance, excellence and sheer delight. Spectacular bouquets, redolent of freshness, fragrance and fruit, astonishingly balanced to perfection, meaty, mouth filling palates, layered with punnets of savoury ripe berries, all wrapped in the type of chewy, seductive tannins which can only be described as understatedly epic. Vega Sicila Valbuena was inaugurally vintaged in 1915, crafted in the style of the Rioja wines of the day, treated to an extended ageing in oaken vats and bottled to order. The first editions were distributed amongst the upper classes and bourgeoisie, but not for commercial purposes. Originally planned as a gift to friends of Vega Sicilia, Valbuena has since become an icon wine and national treasure.
The Ribera del Duero area enjoys a continental climate with an Atlantic influence. There are 250 hectares of vineyard at Vega Sicilia and yields are strictly limited. All vines are dry grown and hand pruned, giving less than two kilos each. Oak is a critical part of the vinification, forging a true consortium with the wine. Valbuena is a cepage of varying proportions, according to vintage, Tempranillo and Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Vega Sicilia Valbuena is treated to maturation in a selection of new and seasoned, French and American oak casks and larger format oak vats for up to three years, followed by two in the bottle before release.
Dark, garnet colour. Opulent nose with a range of wild red fruit essences, raspberries and morello, supported by the presence of vanilla barrel age notes. Rich palate with profound grape tannin structure, wild fruits and savoury notes over a persistence of licorice, blueberries and cassis.
