Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry, the first academically qualified winemaker to take up Clare Valley viticulture in 1949. Constructed during early settlement by a supervisor of colonial convicts, at the very epicentre of the market gardens which serviced Hobart, Clarence House is a heritage listed manor which remains largely unaltered since the 1830s. It passed through several hands before being acquired by the Kilpatricks in 1993, who answered the call of Bacchus and established the grounds to vine. There are now sixteen hectares of viticulture, several significant Burgundy clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with smaller plantings of Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet and Tempranillo. What's most unique about the Clarence House vineyards are the soils and topography, a number of northeast slopes which catch the early sun yet shade the vines from afternoon heat. Starting out in the early 1970s with just one hectare of vine, Jean Marc Brocard has built up to a formidable 120 hectares of the most distinguished viticulture in Chablis. Remarkable for their natural water pebble acidity, a virtue of the minerality within a very special soil, infusing the wine with an exquisite tension which is the timeless signature of all great Chablis. Grapes are assembled from vines harvested off the most illustrious Premier and Grand Cru sites, planted to slopes on either side of the Serein River valley in which the ancient town of Chablis itself is situated.
