Shiraz Eden Valley South Australia
Corey Ryan is one of the nation's most intrepid, artisanal winemakers, a specialist at small batch Eden and Barossa Valley editions, he is called upon by some of the most eminent brands to craft limited releases of the most memorable vintages in old vine Shiraz. A collation of choice parcels, from sites well over fifty years of age, grown by collaborator Simon Cowham, are crafted into an elegant Eden Valley style, resplendent with layers of aromatic berry fruit flavours, on a length of polished tannins and extravagantly fragrant, new French oak.
Parcels of old vine Shiraz are hand picked off choice sites at Moculta and the cooler, elevated aspects of Eden Valley. A combination of whole bunches and crushed, destemmed berries are sent to small, traditional 1½ tonnes open topped fermenters for cold soak maceration and gradual inoculation to a mix of wild indigenous and ambient yeasts. A long slow vinification and regimen of dail pumpovers is followed by transfer to a selection of mostly new French oak hogsheads for completion of ferments, malolactic and term of age. Components are racked only once throughout twenty two months of maturation, achieving extended mouthfeel and the most refined textures. Alcohol 14.5%
Deep inky purple, crimson hues. Dark cherries and bright currant perfumes, seasoned by fragrant cedar and complex spice notes. Layers of blue berry fruit character to the palate, dried herbs, laurel and bay leaf contributing complexity. A well structured Shiraz supported by velvety tannins, its solid core of flavour persists throughout the length of palate.
