The first parcel of Crown Land in the region was acquired by Isaac Phillips in 1857, he christened his estate Golden Ball and built a hotel named Honeymooners Inn, servicing miners on their way up the steep trails to the Beechworth goldfields. The old pub remains but the surrounding land has been turned over to viticulture, planted to vine in the nineteen naughties, it produces a quality of wine that's reserved for the nation's most exclusive winelists. Rockbare are raiders of precious but wayward vineyards, planted to outdated standards of viticulture, sadly unviable for large scale winemaking. These are however, precisely the nature of site that Rockbare choose to retain. Establishing his own label, he embarked upon a secret project to acquire parcels of prodigal Barossa vine. Planted to the tranquil Shangri-La of a sun warmed slope in Yarra Valley, TarraWarra was established 1983 by the founders of the Sussan and Sportsgirl brands. Philanthropists and patrons of the arts, Mr and Mrs Besen, AO and AO respectively, took a highly aesthetic approach to the pursuit of viticulture. The fabulous history of Benedictine began during the renaissance, when a Venetian monk at the Abbey of Fécamp, Dom Bernardo Vincelli, formulated an elixir of 27 plants and spices from the four corners of the globe, produced by the Benedictine monks up until the end of the 18th century. In the turmoil of the French Revolution, the recipe was almost lost forever. In 1791, a Fécamp luminary inadvertantly acquired the 16th century manuscript but in his ignorance of the invaluable secret within, he filed it in his library and forgot all about it. In 1863, Alexandre Le Grand, a distant relation of the Fécamp notable, came across the book of spells by chance and unearthed the secret recipe.
Luminous amber hues. Complex nose of citrus and honey, tradewinds and spice, engaging bouquets that enagage and beguile. Powerful yet smooth palate, honey and perfume, peppery lemon, chocolates and herbaceous green elements, exquisite flavour without tannins or acidity, a refined finish, rich, mellow and long sweet aftertaste.
