Dr Frederick Kiel would take the trek by paddle steamer from Melbourne every summer during the late 1800s to spend his summers at Sorrento. His children established a grazing station nearby, on a property acquired from the Baillieu family along Portsea Ocean Beach, ultimately planted to vineyards in 2000. These are the most extreme western longitudes of Mornington, the undulating paddocks and sweeping views of tempestuous Bass Strait are a magical place for growing Burgundesque styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, well protected north facing parcels of propitious free draining limestone and calcareous sands. The windswept maritime vineyards of little Portsea.. Mornington's westernmost vineyards»

$2495.50
Situated in Wiltingen in a side valley of the Saar at 180 to 280 metres elevation and facing south, the slopes of Scharzhofberger are quite steep at an incline of 30 to 60. Formed from grey Devonian slate, the soils are very deep with no underlying bedrock. Soils are very well drained yet retain sufficient moisture, a characteristic shared by many of the finest European vineyards. The Einzellage covers sixty seven acres, of which Egon Muller owns seventeen. These include three hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines planted in the last century. Kabinett is a very racy and austere wine, with superb mineral toned complexity and a steely edge of acidity, Riesling at its most ethereal.
Pale gold hue. Quartz and lime, citrus and honeysuckle nose. The most striking element is its impeccable balance. A steely bite of acidity and minerality give it a racy, kinetic feel under fresh green apple and lime notes. With some air it begins to acquire a supple richness, hinting at further development to come. A brilliantly composed Riesling wine.
