Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Named after Captain Richmond Houghton, it was not until Thomas Yule's stewardship that vines were planted and the first vintage of Houghton wine flowed in 1859. Some precious old blocks of ancient vine Grenache still remain after a government sponsored program to cull unproductive vineyards during the 1980s. Yielding excruciatingly small harvests of the most characterful fruit, these wizzened old veterans deliver small batch vintages which are evocative of the old world classics from Cotes du Rhone. There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery. Both were ultimately auctioned off to the highest bidders and sown to vine. A third undeveloped site became the subject of a long running feud among the new and old neighbours. Dodgy invoices between the rivals were exchanged and the division of firewood became a further cause of contention. A truce was eventually called by the two protagonists, Brokenwood and Hungerford Hill, for the sake of healthy viticulture. Andrew Nugent grew up next door to the great historical wineworks at Penfolds Magill. He honed his craft as viticulturalist and vigneron amongst the illustrious wineries of old McLaren Vale. Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia
Conceptually, an adaptation of the pulp novel Sin on Wheels, realized through an equitable coupling of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Fruit is harvested off fully mature vines, crushed into fermenters and treated to maceration for the optimal extraction of colour and tannins. A course of vinification on skins and pressing into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, for the completion of malolactic and term of maturation. This is Passion, a monster bigger than the three of us that leads us to soapbox, even to grandstand and sometimes pass out on the couch.

Inky ruby colour. Complex aromas of vivid red and dark berries, pungent herbs and fresh flowers. Round and seductive, with silky raspberry and blackberry preserve flavors braced by nervy minerality. Stains the palate with energetic red berry flavors, no intrusive tannins to get in the way of the fruit. There is always the danger that while drinking a bottle of Punks, you may also be pushed to acts of complete random.

Some Young Punks
We wanted to do something that had been done before, to make exceptional wine with small estate charm

We blame the booze. The whiff and the swill did us in and all that was left to do was to make more. In many ways the wines that weren’t worth the pull on the cork caused this as much as the wines that we will never have the pleasure of decorking again.

The ethos is simple, to create charismatic wines that are true to what Some Young Punks think wine is about. This is Passion, a monster bigger than the three of us that leads us to soapbox, grandstand and sometimes pass out on the couch.

We believe that awesome wine is a powerful aid to creativity, there is always the danger that while drinking a bottle of Punks, you may also be pushed to acts of complete random. It keeps us ticking over.

I refer you, the jury, to the gaudy bottles of plonk stamped Some Young Punks. It's OK to judge a book by its cover , we judged the covers of books to decide on these labels.

Some Young Punks

We need you to see us, and we don't have lineage or tithe, not even a family crest to take up the papaer on the glass. These labels are as bright and bold as the wines they clothe.

Each wine, each vintage and each label is a moment that will never come again, a winemaker should only ever promise to be consistently good, not just consistent.

Each time we make a wine it may be the last wine we make, and if it isn't worthy of being the last then it will not wear the Some Young Punks name.

We believe that awesome wine is a powerful aid to creativity. The truth is that the wines so far have almost made themselves. The best fruit always does.
