The Heathcote Wineworks were one of the first commercial wineries in central Victoria. Prominently placed along Heathcote's main boulevard, established by Thomas Craven in 1854 to cater for the huge influx of gold miners seeking their fortune. Thomas Craven was a purveyor of spirits and wine, he traded in gold, providing a lifeline to local prospectors. An entrepreneurial type, he also operated a coach service from stables behind the cellar door, despatching supplies and delivering mail around the central Victorian goldfields. Established 1851 by the French Marist order, Mission Estate are New Zealand's oldest winery, under continuous management ever since. James Allardice established GlenDronach Distillery in 1826, it has since passed through the stewardship of Scotland's most eminent Whisky producers, Walter Scott, Charles Grant and William Teacher & Sons. Many of the original buildings are still functional, one is haunted by a Spanish woman who arrived in a Sherry cask. The very special Single Malt which bears the Allardice moniker is treated to eighteen years in a selection of seasoned Spanish Oloroso barrels, non chill filtered and bottled at a highly agreeable 46%, an exceptional experience in Speyside Whisky.
