Shiraz Barossa South Australia
The Peter Lehmann team can be proud of a long and illustrious history with Barossa Shiraz. An international success story in its own right, Peter Lehmann's foundation wine is highly regarded everywhere, a Shiraz offering great depth of flavour, character and charm. Peter Lehmann once said, only half jokingly, that when God created Shiraz, he did so with the Barossa in mind! Praised by the industry press for representing the best value in Shiraz year in and year out, a generous wine of intense fruit flavours mellowed to a soft finish by maturation in small format oak.
Barossa Valley escaped the scourge of the devastating phylloxera epidemic, consequently many of it's vineyards remain planted on their original rootstock, direct descendants of cuttings brought to Australia by settlers in the early 1800s from Hermitage in the Rhone Valley. Shiraz grapes are sourced from good vineyards managed by the best Barossa growers, many of whom have been supplying Peter Lehman since his earliest vintages. Fruit is inoculated and vinified on skins for seven days in temperature controlled fermenters. Following pressing, clarification and assemblage, the finished wine is matured twelve months in a selection of French and American oak hogsheads prior to bottling.
Great depth of colour. Tantalising aromas of dark plum and black fruits with just a hint of background oak, milled pepper and attractive sweet cedar notes. A seamless wine with excellent structure, the palate has a good depth of dark berry flavours and a touch of savouryness, in harmonious balance, all reined in by soft but firm, fine grained tannins. The perfect steak wine, a fine accompaniment to roasts.
