The mean gravelly soils and invigorating climes of Mount Barker of the Australian southwest, were identified during the 1960s by the world's leading viticulturalists, as a place uncannily similar to the great terroirs and clime of Bordeaux. The pioneering vines of Forest Hill were the first ever planted here, sired from rootstock of ancient Houghton clones, inaugurally vintaged by the illustrious Jack Mann in 1972. The Cabernet and Riesling of Forest Hill were promptly distinguished by multiple trophy victories and praised by gentleman James Halliday as the most remarkable wines to come out of the Australian west. Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Having barely scraped through the ravages of phyloxera and a period of disrepute, the fortunes of Tahbilk were turned around by Purbrick who was the first to market Australian wine under its varietal name. Argiano's vineyards are blessed by favourable climes and choice terrains. Temperate winds from the Maremma cool the vines in summer, while nearby Monte Amiata shelters the whole area from inclement weather. Grapes are usually picked September to October, depending on the type of soil, the exposure of vineyards and vagaries of vintage. Following a traditional and minimalist, old world style of vinification, Argiano Brunello is treated to a natural malolactic and extended term of maturation. It can be aged for as long as it takes, years in a combination of seasoned oak barrels and larger format vats.
