Lindsay McCall's enthusiasm for great wine began in the 1970s, he established his first Mornington plantings in 1985 on the site of a derelict orchard at Red Hill along Paringa Road. From day one, McCall focused on exactingly managing the soils and the vines, after completing his day job as local school teacher. His affinity for the land and astonishing feel for winemaking produced monumental vintages of Pinot Noir, which propelled the exquisite range of Paringa Estate wines to international renown. Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Montespertoli lies to the southwest of Florence, between the valleys of Pesa and d'Elsa, a range of sloping hills in an open and sun filled countryside, where cypress trees sway in the breeze, ploughed fields are defined by woodlands and olive groves, which yield a golden oil that enriches local cuisine. Sangiovese grapes are vinified by Fattorie Parri to a mix of modern and traditional techniques, into a complex and elegant wine, intense with perfume and supported by sound palate structure.
Ruby colour, garnet hues. Perfume of cherry, anise and black berries, green olive and char. A persistent palate of fleshy fruit flavours, plums, apple and dark red cherry over a frame of pliant tannins, resolving on a long finish of currant, oregano and olive, smoky char and leaf.
