Shiraz Viognier Adelaide Hills South Australia
By the winner of the 2014 Jimmy Watson Trophy! During his time as chief red wine maker at Hardy's, Stephen Pannell became intmate with many of the greater Adelaide region's most splendid sites. A predominantly Syrah wine with a de rigueur inclusion of good Viognier, all picked off a superior low yielding Adelaide Hills vineyard. An outstanding and engaging new world articulation of the timeless Rhone Valley style, elegant and refined, an underlying sense of power and depth of flavour, a delight to share alongside appropriately five star cuisine.
From a choice site in Adelaide Hills near Echunga, off vines planted to well drained, granitic soils, 410 metres above sea level. Fruit is completely hand harvested and placed into small, traditional open top fermenters. A component of whole bunches is introduced, vintage permitting, to initiate partial carbonic maceration, extract fine stem tannins and enhance complexity. Temperatures are kept between a wide range of 15°C and 34°C throughout a fortnight of vinification, while treating the ferments to cap management regimens of hand plunging and pumpovers. The finished wine is treated to a extended term in a selection of seasoned and new, large format French barrels and smaller oak puncheons.
Deep purple red colour. Highly perfumed, vibrant and complex, floral notes of violet and dried herb, red currants and hints of black liquorice. Juicy black fruits with a measure of peppery spice over gently integrated dry, earthy tannins.
