Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Charlie emabarked on a crusade.. Melton makes a mean mourvedre»
Jack Mann reigns eternal as the greatest winemaker in the history of the Australian west. Jack Mann's son Tony grew up amongst the vineyards of Houghton but took a keener interest in things Cricket. He exelled at both pursuits but is best remembered as the legendary leg spinner Tony Rocket Mann. During his off seasons away from the pitch, Tony would plant parcels of vine alongside his illustruious father Jack and his own young son Robert. The fully grown Robert now makes his own wine, from fruit of the very vines sown by Jack and Tony Mann. The structure, style and superb quality of Warre's Ports are defined by its vineyards. The mainstay of Warre's Ports is provided by three great estates, Quinta da Cavadinha, Quinta do Retiro Antigo and Quinta da Telhada. The latter was acquired by Warre's in 2006 and this riverside property now makes a significant contribution. Further to these, Warre's are able to draw on the production of a collection of other sites with long associations. Quinta do Retiro Antigo is one of the finest vineyards in Rio Torto. A historical landmark with spectacular 18th century stone terraces, most of which grow just one row. These ancient vines produce superb grapes that perfectly complement fruit from Cavadinha.
Inky and concentrated, an opaque colour given by the famous old vines of Retiro Antigo. This concentration combines perfectly with the freshness imparted by wines from the higher lying Cavadinha vineyards to produce lovely fresh flavours of blackberry fruit. A wine of enormous elegance, combining vibrant lifted fruit with power and long lasting flavours. Vintage 2007 is much enhanced by the exuberance of Telhada Touriga Franca grapes.
