Dr Frederick Kiel would take the trek by paddle steamer from Melbourne every summer during the late 1800s to spend his summers at Sorrento. Josef Chromy OAM escaped from war torn Czechoslovakia as a penniless 19 year old in 1950, he fled across minefields, evading soldiers and killer dogs, ultimately finding a new home in the lucky country. Right next to the Merry Widow Inn at Glenrowan, infamous of Kelly gang folklore, Richard Bailey set up shop to service prospectors during the great Victorian gold rush of the 1860s. Rows of newly planted Shiraz soon followed and the Baileys released their first vintage in 1870. The region was ultimately infected by the terrible vine killing plague of the 1890s, a guarded blessing for Glenrowan, which elevated the quarantine status of its vitiated vineyards to a marque of the highest provenance. Yes they really do exist, thousands of tourists visit the French Camarague every year to delight in the wonder of frolicking pink flamingos. A venerable estate of some historical import, Domaine De Jarras practise the challenging viticulture of beach sands and estuary soils. Planted within metres of the Mediterranean, their vineyards are nourished by rich sediments deposited by River Rhône. Grenache is the grape of choice, the locals make every style of wine from it, red and white, sparkling and Rosé. Domaine De Jarras have been crafting outstanding pink wines here since the 1860s.
