Chardonnay Pinot Noir Pinot Meunier Champagne, Epernay France
The definitive Pol Roger styling, a composition of thirty base wines, drawn from at least two vintages. An assemblage of the holy trinity in equal proportions, Pinot Noir from the villages of Montagne de Reims, contributing body and character. The lightness and elegance of Chardonnay from the town of Epernay itself and from the Cote des Blancs. Pinot Meunier from the Vallee de la Marne brings youthfulness and vigour. The perfect aperitif Champagne which the noble House of Pol Roger will never release until it is at least three years old.
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining great family owned Champagne houses. As one of the smaller estates, Champagne Pol Roger owns eighty seven hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Vallee d'Epernay and the Côte des Blancs, drawing the remainder of their supplies from individual growers, many of whom have supplied Pol Roger for generations. Its cellars, extending to seven kilometers, lie on three levels in the chalk below the streets of Epernay and are among the deepest and coolest cellars in the region. These seemingly extravagant resources contribute to the slow maturation and creation of fine, persistent bubbles which are the hallmark of Pol Roger.
An exciting wine to observe, the colour is deep, the bead indicates finesse. Pol Roger is dominated by white flowers and green apple, brioche and a trace of minerality. On the palate there are notes of stonefruit, nuttiness and characters of honey, all supporting the freshness of the chalky acidity. This is the aperitif champagne par excellence, yet one which has sufficient backbone to be savoured with fish, lobster, or spicey dishes. An unrivalled reputation within the trade by virtue of a consistent standard of excellence. A tribute to the diligence of Pol Roger, from selection, to vinification, to inclusion. A progeny of the coolest and deepest cellars in Epernay, a glimpse of the sublime. Excellence since 1849.
