Shiraz Eden Valley South Australia
One of the most internationally renowned, new world winemaking estates, Elderton retain a site of mature Shiraz vines planted to rocky, mineral rich soils, near the hamlet of Craneford on the elevated aspects of Valley Eden. It is here that the cooler climes lead to an extended ripening season, developing great complexity in the grapes, encouraging exciting fresh milled pepper characters and achieving the most elegant tannins. A graceful and polished Shiraz with the structure and finesse to serve alongside wagyu beef, venison rack or rare breast of duck.
Eden Valley Shiraz is a stellar achiever, it carries a style that's somewhat different to its siblings grown lower down the Barossa Valley floor. Inauspicious soils and challenging topographies, late vintages and inhospitable mesoclimes, all have a significant influence on the vines. The Elderton property at Craneford is one of the most scenic sites in Valley Eden, it yields an outstanding quality of red wine. Elderton choose to treat their Eden Valley Shiraz to older barrels, keeping the stately fruit character upfront while framing the finished wine within a delicate veneer of oak. Parcels of Shiraz are pressed straight into well seasoned American oak puncheons for vinification and a year's maturation.
Deep purple red colour. Plum and raspberry nose, cherries and red fruit notes, licorice and eucalypt. Medium bodied and dry, the palate is generous and long, supple yet rich, layered with berry and stone fruit flavours. Seasoned by a measure of red licorice characters, High Altitude resolves, lingering and long, on a finish of medium weight, velvety tannins.
