Shiraz Barossa South Australia
Bethany's reserve wines are a product of evolution rather than creation. GR has evolved into one of the Barossa's most distinguished Shiraz, but it's not every year that one is made. Parcels of the most exquisite grapes are picked from splendid sites and treated to an exacting vinification. Each vintage the red wines are assessed and a decision is made to determine if there is a parcel of GR quality. A formidable, full bodied classic with an enormous palate, complex engaging aromas and undeniable ageing potential, only a few hundred cases are ever bottled.
Every year there was a single parcel of fruit which kept grabbing the attention of the Bethany winemakers. It came from a small property of less than five acres at the foothills of the Barossa ranges, planted to vines up to sixty years of age grown to classic Barossa red brown earths overlaying limestone. The small yields here deliver small berries with maximum flavour and impressive colour, whilst the breezes around the foothills ensure a gradual ripening and fine tannins. Individual parcels that are worthy of inclusion are treated to a separate vinification in open four tonne fermenters. GR 10 is matured twelve to sixteen months in a selection of new and seasoned American and French oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5%
Dense ruby red with hints of purple. Ripe plums, mulberry and chocolate notes backed by oaky vanillin nuances fill the bouquet. Plum and briar flavours on the palate are tempered by toasty oak flavours. This wine is showing good concentration and weight featuring well integrated, fine grained tannins. The finish is long and satisfying. A superb food wine that's built to last, decant before serving and enjoy with steak and kidney pie or mature cheddar.
