Old Richmond Gaol was one of Diemen Land's first prisons, built by the convicts themselves, of good old fashioned granite blocks, laboriously hauled in wooden hand carts and quarried from the ominously monikered Butchers Hill. Major Sir Thomas Mitchell left more than just an invaluable bequeth of our nation's most detailed frontier maps. Mitchell distinguished himself in Wellington's army during the Napoleonic wars in the renowned 95th Baker Rifles. A gifted draftsman, he found his way to the nascent colonies of Australia, where his acumen at mapmaking won him the office of Surveyor General. During one of Mitchell's historical expeditions, he charted the fertile lands around Victoria's Goulburn Valley, establishing the colonial fruitgrowing township of Mitchell's Town. Established 1973, Woodlands of Wilyabrup were one of the first vineyards in Margaret River, planted with a view to emulating the great growths of Bordeaux. Egerton E S Dennis settled on ninety acres of vineyard at McLaren Flat after serving in the RAAF. Ege pioneered the production of Mead and sold his crop of wine grapes to some of Australia's most eminent brands before founding his own label in 1971, with the object of converting the high quality fruit into pure, estate made wines. Since establishment, Dennis Wines have collected hundreds of medals and accolades at national and international taste offs, twice claiming the revered Bushing King awards for best wine at the McLaren Vale Winemakers Exhibition.

Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of early morning and vinified at 24C in open fermenters, treated to a continuous gentle agitation of the cap and twice daily pumpovers. After several days of ferment on skins, juices are run off to a basket press and returned to the free runs. Following completion of malolactic, Peter Dennis is matured for a year in a selection of American and French oak hogsheads.
Bright, dark scarlet colour. Luscious nose of coffee, cherries and plum, pepper, tarry earth and baking spice. Big, full bodied and soft to the palate, characterised by fresh fruit flavours of blackberry and plums, laced with black pepper, supported by a lean firm acid/ tannin structure helping to round out the finish. The ideal accompaniment to roast meats, grilled steak and hard cheese.

Ege pioneered the production of Mead and sold his crop of wine grapes to some of Australia's most eminent brands before founding his own label in 1971, with the object of converting the high quality fruit into pure, estate made wines. Since establishment, Dennis Wines have collected over 200 medals at national and international wine shows, twice claiming the revered Bushing King awards for best wine at the McLaren Vale Winemakers Exhibition. The tradition continues of producing vintages of the finest quality McLaren Vale wine.

The estate's Nindethana Vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The property is beautifully situated at McLaren Flat at the base of Mount Lofty Ranges where the soil, climate and rainfall are ideal for the purpose.
