Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Having barely scraped through the ravages of phyloxera and a period of disrepute, the fortunes of Tahbilk were turned around by Purbrick who was the first to market Australian wine under its varietal name. Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Sydney Hamilton was a highly accomplished oenologist who established the Leconfield brand in 1974, at the ripe old age of 76. His commemorative label is crafted from the top cut of Cabernet Sauvignon, hand picked off the original estate plantings, vinified in Sydney's favourite old fermenter, finished in a luxurious selection of completely new Dargaud Jaeglé French oak hogsheads and aged an extravagant twenty nine months. Dominated by opaque winegum, black cherries and cassis, draped in a robe of satin tannins, Coonawarra Cabernet of the highest order.
