An Irish cobbler named Reilly settled into the tiny Clare Valley township of Mintaro circa 1856. He converted a stone barn into a homestead cottage. Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Antonio Carpene was the first winemaker to fashion a quality Veneto Prosecco in the traditional Charmat sparkling process. Founded in 1868, Carpene Malvolti have been crafting the finest effervescent wines from grapes harvested off mature vines planted to the beautiful verdant hillsides of Veneto. The rolling lanscapes at 200 to 300 metres above sea level in the historic DOCG districts of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene are blessed by excellent exposure to sun and the most favourable ripening conditions.
