The mean gravelly soils and invigorating climes of Mount Barker of the Australian southwest, were identified during the 1960s by the world's leading viticulturalists, as a place uncannily similar to the great terroirs and clime of Bordeaux. The pioneering vines of Forest Hill were the first ever planted here, sired from rootstock of ancient Houghton clones, inaugurally vintaged by the illustrious Jack Mann in 1972. The Cabernet and Riesling of Forest Hill were promptly distinguished by multiple trophy victories and praised by gentleman James Halliday as the most remarkable wines to come out of the Australian west. His acumen at healing fractures and setting splints made Gottfried a leading local identity, as his homestead cottage evolved into the Barossa's very first private hospital. Based in the Murray Darling region, the Zilzie winemaking team take regular trips to the Barossa Valley, inspecting the health of vineyards and munching on the fruit as it grows on the vine to isolate parcels of ultra fine Barossa Shiraz. Harvests from choice vineyards are separately crushed and vinified. Ferments are pumped over three times daily to extract good colour and the softest tannins. Upon completion, batches are gently pressed before the free run and pressings are transferred to a selection of French oak barriques for a year's maturation, before assembling into a wine exhibiting excellent depth of colour, richness of palate structure and complexity of flavour. Alcohol 13.5%
Deep crimson red with purple hues. Concentrated dark fruits and pepper spice with vanillin and cedar oak characters. Full bodied with rapberry and licorice, anise, blueberry and spice flavours complemented by fine supple tannins before a toasty, vanillin oak finish.
