Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. Black Chook is a collaboration between maestro Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson, proprietor of the salubrious Penny's Hill. Grapes are sourced from the Tomich property at Woodside in Onkaparinga Valley, a family owned and operated vineyard which yields the quality of fruit which has brought Adelaide Hills such renown. A vital Sauvignon Blanc that's fresh, beautiful to the taste and as invigorating as the cool Hills from whence it came, the idyllic growing conditions at Woodside deliver a gorgeous wine with crisp mineral textures and revitalizing palate.

The Galvanized Wine Group is a mob of Aussies with plenty of passion and good creds. The intrepid Ben Riggs makes the wines but all stakeholders, growers and staff get in on the act. To make a Black Chook, selection of site is central to the finished style of wine. The Tomich vineyard yields fruit with exceptional quality and balance. The unequivocally cool climate, very old, low to moderately fertile podsolic over schitz quartz soils yield outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Parcels of grapes from Block J and Block L are destemmed straight into the press. A regimen of skin contact is employed to extract maximum flavours before inoculation and controlled, low temperature fermentation.
Light, bright straw colour. Freshly cut spring grass and sage on the nose, paired nicely with citrus and a touch of passionfruit sweetness to the mid palate. Call this a wine of many adjectives, fragrant and full of flavour, redolent of fresh herbs and cool climate fruit, stimulating, just perfect with food.

Woop Woop is a collaboration between intrepid winemaker Ben Riggs and vigneron Tony Parkinson, proprietor of runaway success Penny's Hill. The range includes wines under Mr Riggs own label label - "making the wines I love" - from the Riggs family's Piebald Gully Vineyard and only from other plots considered to be outstanding. Penny's Hill, proudly Australian, more so McLaren Vale from its own high performance McLaren Valley Vineyards.

McLaren Vale has an unrivalled reputation in Australia and indeed the world, for constantly producing first-class wines. As they scratched around for a name for the first Shiraz Viognier, an obviously interested black chook stopped in its unplanned tracks, lingering, as only chooks do, just long enough for the penny to drop. For its trouble, they immortalised that single Black Chook, rationalising that it had come from a small white egg, just as their dark, inky, black Shiraz had been transformed by a tiny amount of fragrant white Viognier. Utilising premium fruit from eminent wine regions in South Australia, The Black Chook brand struts affordable wines to be enjoyed and adored, shared and celebrated!
