Established 1908, Redman's Coonawarra are still made by the Redman brothers from fruit grown to the original family parcels. The tradition began 1901 when Bill Redman, at the tender age of fourteen, made the journey to take up an apprenticeship at the John Riddoch wineworks and to labour amongst Coonawarra's founding vineyards. Bill Redman's earliest vintages were sold off to other companies but it was not until 1952 that the Redman family released their own wines under the moniker Rouge Homme. Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. To create what is widely considered one of the best single malt Scotch whiskies in the world, Glenfiddich use the finest malted barley, a single source of soft and crystal clear water - the Robbie Dhu springs - and exactly the same process that the distillery's ancestors used more than 100 years ago. Even the modern day copper stills have been crafted as faithfully as possible to the original, every original bump and dent faithfully reproduced lest the flavour should be affected.
Glenfiddich Solera Reserve 15 Year Old has a full and fruity nose, with delicate honey and vanilla notes. It is wonderfully smooth, with a great depth of flavour, combining fruit, gentle spice and a touch of oakiness. A mix of dried fruits and milk chocolate on the nose. Touch of fruit and some walnut/orange sherry notes. Crisp, with a finish of fresh raspberries, chocolate and cream. The finish is long and satisfying.
