There are four tiny patches of vine at Scotchman's Hill, which have been mollycoddled by Robin Brockett, since the start of his tenure as chief winemaker in the 1980s. Excruciatingly limited after a strict pruning and rigorous sorting of fruit, they each yield a mere hundred cases of wine. Brockett has set aside the precious harvests of these superior blocks for his own label, a personal project to hand craft the finest of vintage, an exclusive range of the Bellarine's most elite single vineyard efforts. Grown to the frigid climes of Central Otago, the vines at Prophet's Rock were established 1999 to the most auspicious sites in the nether regions around the ancient goldfields of Bendigo Creek. Challenging aspects with breathtaking views of Cromwell Basin and Pisa Ranges, these are places defined by their fortuitous soils and favourable climes, tiny parcels of vine capable of just a few hundred cases each vintage, picked for their confluence of growing conditions and husbanded by a devout cadre. Greg Melick embarked on the prodigal road to gambling and booze as a mere teenager, after winning the daily double at Werribee and spending the lot on good red wine. He ultimately returned to the straight and narrow, achieving the rank of ADF Major General, Senior Law Counsel, Master Wine Judge and Officer of Australia AO. Travails Of Tahbilk»
Returning to his home along the Nagambie Lakes after the completion of service during World War II, Eric Purbrick discovered a cache of wine, hidden circa 1876 under the family estate cellars. Though pale in colour, it was sound and drinkable after seven decades. The promise of long lived red wine inspired Purbrick to establish new plantings at Chateau Tahbilk in 1949, today they are some of Victoria's oldest productive Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The Greenstone Point vineyards are located on choice soils within the renowned Marlborough winegrowing region. Made famous for it's world class Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough is graced by a picturesque coastline, sheltered bays and scenic harbours. The Greenstone Point winemakers are as fastidious at managing vines as they are at maintaining the natural beauty of the country, putting their philosophy of minimalist intervention into practice. Their devoted efforts are rewarded each vintage by harvests of ripe and intensely flavoured fruit.

During the course of winter, the Greenstone team set up the following year's crop by cane pruning each individual vine by hand, a highly labour intensive effort which yields Semillon and Sauvignon grapes of the highest order. Fruit is harvested throughout the cool of night from the Rowley Crescent, Sandy Creek and Stoney Range vineyards at either end of Rapaura Road in the heart of Marlborough and transported to the winery for immediate processing. Juices are settled after a gentle pressing and racked to fermentation. Inoculated to choice yeasts and treated to a cool fermentation for seventeen days, the wines are given three months of lees contact before assembling, a light fining and filtration. Approx 13.0%
Deep pale straw with a tinge of lime rind in colour. Abundant aromas of gooseberry, tropical fruits, citrus, capsicums and pineapple. A full and well rounded, broadly layered palate, lively and fresh, exhibiting rich concentration before a long and persistent, lingering finish. Greenstone Point vineyards are located within the renowned Marlborough wine region of New Zealand

Marlborough is well worth a visit not only famous for its famous wines, but also its picturesque coastline of the Marlborough Sounds, featuring many sheltered bays and harbours. Greenstone Point Winery started in 1997 as a joint venture company, Greenstone Point now has its own vineyard in Marlborough and produces wine from the company owned vineyards as well as selected Marlborough growers. Currently Greenstone Point produces around 15,000 cases per annum.

To date Greenstone Point wines have found an overwhelmingly favourable response throughout New Zealand, Australia, the USA and the United Kingdom. Greenstone Point management have ambitious plans for the company, the goal being to acquire more land for planting and to be a dominant middle sized New Zealand wine company offering premium wines at value for money price points.

The Greenstone Point winemakers hold a passionate belief that great wine is made in the vineyard, consequently a real emphasis is placed on vineyard management. This is done by intensive canopy management during the summer, beginning with VSP trellising systems. The labour intensive vineyards management allows the winegrowers to carry out practices such as shoot positioning, shoot spacing, shoot thinning, leaf plucking and fruit thinning.

Throughout winter the following year’s crop is prepared by individually cane pruning each individual vine by hand. Very labour intensive stuff but central to the philosophy that the best possible fruit is necessary for the crafting of the highest possible quality wines.

Greenstone Point

The Greenstone Point Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are sourced from the winery's estate vineyards as well as local growers. Gently pressed and settled prior to undergoing a cool fermentation they both display the floral aromas and lively tropical highlights that have made Marlborough the international ambassador of New Zealand's wines.

The Chardonnay is from vineyard sites in Marlborough and Waipara. After a gentle pressing, a portion undergoes 50% wood fermentation and extended lees contact to develop rich and creamy characters. The Greenstone Point Pinot Noir is hand plunged three times per day and spends an average of 13 days on skins. This is a beautifully balanced Marlborogh Pinot which displays rich earthy and berry fruit flavours.
