The story of Langmeil begins with early Barossa settlement, planted to Shiraz by Christian Auricht in the 1840s, the estate vineyards were restored by the Lindner and Bitter families during the 1990s. Some of Herr Auricht's original plantings are still in production, three and a half priceless acres of gnarled, dry grown vines which provided the cuttings for much of Langmeil's refurbished heirloom parcels. A princely range of old, to very old single vineyard wines, delineated by the eloquence of each unique site, defined by the provenance of history and pioneer folklore. Thirsting For Thistledown»
Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. An Irish cobbler named Reilly settled into the tiny Clare Valley township of Mintaro circa 1856. He converted a stone barn into a homestead cottage. Reilly's Cottage served as the local cobbler's shop in the centre of the bustling town, which had boomed after the establishment of salubrious slate quarries. Each and every vintage presents Robin Brockett with a new challenge, no two growing seasons are the same, a truly great vineyard will take the vagaries of vintage and achieve a harvest that's truly unique. Brockett takes the fruit that's most articulate of terroir and clime, there's never very much of such high standards, enough for just a hundred cases of Bellarine's best. The fruit of Swinburn Vineyard is defined by its dark red fruit pectins, thick skinned cherries and dewy bramble, a curl of cedar oak and twist of the spice mill, a seamless ruby tannin finish.

Robin Brockett has spent over 35 years striving to perfect the art of winemaking, since 1988 as Chief Winemaker at Scotchmans Hill

Winemaking is an art and a large part of that art is understanding the beauty and complexity deeply rooted in the vines from which the wine originates from. Winemakers are working with a natural product and as such, face a new challenge each and every vintage. The process is just as exciting as it is demanding, especially when Robin Brockett assembles grapes from local growers. Each and every vintage is a new challenge. No two vineyards are the same and that is where winemaking is so much fun. There is nothing like taking the grapes and appreciating their particular nuances to bring out the artisan in a winemaker.

Like all dedicated perfectionists, Brockett knows mastery is something he will always be aspiring to, it's what continues to drive him after so many years in the industry. Brockett's passion lies in creating wines which have a sense of place; wines that are a part of people’s experiences and lives.
