John Ellis would take every opportune weekend away from his regular New York Paris route, to pursue a passion for viticulture. He planted the first commercial Cabernet Merlot vines in the Hamptons and found time between trans atlantic flights to work vintages amongst the Grand Cru vineyards of La Bourgogne. Lindsay McCall's enthusiasm for great wine began in the 1970s, he established his first Mornington plantings in 1985 on the site of a derelict orchard at Red Hill along Paringa Road. From day one, McCall focused on exactingly managing the soils and the vines, after completing his day job as local school teacher. Major Sir Thomas Mitchell left more than just an invaluable bequeth of our nation's most detailed frontier maps. Mitchell distinguished himself in Wellington's army during the Napoleonic wars in the renowned 95th Baker Rifles. A gifted draftsman, he found his way to the nascent colonies of Australia, where his acumen at mapmaking won him the office of Surveyor General. During one of Mitchell's historical expeditions, he charted the fertile lands around Victoria's Goulburn Valley, establishing the colonial fruitgrowing township of Mitchell's Town. Yabby Lake are well positioned to produce the most generously proportioned styles of new world Pinot Noir, vinified to traditional Burgundian techniques. Significant resources have been devoted to developing Yabby Lake's vineyard to the highest possible standard. An assemblage of Pinot Noir clones MV6 and G5V15, clones 114, Pommard and Abel for structure and complexity, the inclusion of a parcel clone 115 imparts layers of elegance, rich fragrant aromas and a long silky palate.

Every aspect of Yabby Lake vineyard's establishment was fundamenal to the success of its wines many years later, from soil mapping to climate analysis to vine layout. Selection of site was the priority, the vineyard was planted from the ground up to the most exacting requirements. Pruned and closely managed vines, yield limited harvests of intense flavour, translating into well balanced wines. A mixture of destemmed and whole bunch fruit are filled into open fermenters for three days of cold soak. A week or more of ferments is followed by transfer to a selection of French 500 litres oak puncheons for ten months maturation, a final racking and assemblage into the finished wne.
Deep crimson in colour. The aromas are dominated by cherry, strawberry and dark berry fruits complemented by a touch of spice and underlying French oak. The palate has a lovely soft and velvety texture, with powerful flavours of dark fruits and a finely structured finish. Have it with duck or venison, game dishes and washed rind cheese.

Yabby Lake Vineyard was established in 1998 on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, with the long-term goal of producing benchmark wines from the Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Yabby Lake Vineyard is owned by Robert and Mem Kirby who have been intimately involved in the Mornington Peninsula region for decades. The Kirbys are joined by two outstanding and renowned winemakers: Group Winemaker Tod Dexter and Consulting Winemaker Larry McKenna. Tod and Larry are known for their relaxed and unassuming personalities, and they apply the same approach to their winemaking: they work with the grapes to develop beautiful and distinctly superior wines that are truly expressive of Yabby Lake Vineyard. The first vintage from Yabby Lake Vineyard was produced in 2002.

The stunning Mornington Peninsula is a patchwork of small premium wineries and vineyards. Located 60 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, the region is virtually surrounded by sea and enjoys a cool maritime climate. Established in 1998, Yabby Lake Vineyard is planted on one of the regions premier vineyard sites.

Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, Yabby Lake Vineyard wines are a tribute to the unique Mornington Peninsula terroir, and the skills and experience of winemakers Larry McKenna and Tod Dexter.
