Established 1908, Redman's Coonawarra are still made by the Redman brothers from fruit grown to the original family parcels. The tradition began 1901 when Bill Redman, at the tender age of fourteen, made the journey to take up an apprenticeship at the John Riddoch wineworks and to labour amongst Coonawarra's founding vineyards. Bill Redman's earliest vintages were sold off to other companies but it was not until 1952 that the Redman family released their own wines under the moniker Rouge Homme. Redman was finally branded under its own label in 1966, it remains one of the most enduring marques in Coonawarra. Heritage Of Haan»
Established 1853 by George Friedrich Schmidt, who acquired eighteen choice hectares of viticulture at Tanunda along Siegersdorf Road, for the peppercorn price of a pound per acre, Haan endures as one of the Barossa's quietly achieving, arcane old vineyards. Distinguished in the 21st century by a streak of prestigious industry accolades, Australian Wine Producer of Year, Gold Medal and Trophy for Best Blended Red at the illustrious London International Wine & Spirit Competition. Samuel Smith migrated from Dorset England to Angaston in the colony of South Australia circa 1847, he took up work as a gardener with George Fife Angas, the virtual founder of the colony. In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Angas's great grandchild Ron Angas acquired cuttings from the Edelstone site and migrated the precious plantings to his pastures at Hutton Vale. Hubbub in the Hunter»
There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery. Both were ultimately auctioned off to the highest bidders and sown to vine. A third undeveloped site became the subject of a long running feud among the new and old neighbours. Dodgy invoices between the rivals were exchanged and the division of firewood became a further cause of contention. A truce was eventually called by the two protagonists, Brokenwood and Hungerford Hill, for the sake of healthy viticulture. Swings & Roundabouts retain access to some of Western Australia's best vineyards. Their rounder and more deliberate style of Chardonnay targets fresh drinking rather than oak overkill. The pick of Margaret River's fruit is vinified into a finely honed Chardonnay wine with effusive stonefruit/ apple characters and brisk vegetative acidity, made even more attractive by a course of luxurious barrel ferments, adding texture and infusing the wine with warming vanilla spice. A treat alongside prawns or chicken caesar, Swings & Roundabouts is an easy to appreciate aperitif style.

A collation of fruit from the estate's Swings vineyard alongside parcels from some of the most ardent growers, vinified and augmented by ageing in a third of French oak to complement it's creamy palate, loads of fresh fruit fragrance and regional Chardonnay characters. Having earned a reputation as one of West Australia's leading winemakers, based around a young and enthusiastic team, Swings & Roundabouts are accomplished at crafting the vigorous Margaret River styles. Picked throughout the cool of night, grapes are cold pressed and clear juice fermented to natural yeasts. Half of the wine is treated to oak barrel and matured several months under the estate cellars. Alcohol 13.0%
Pale green to light luminous straw hues. Lifted attractive melon fruits on the bouquet with hints of lifted nectarine, subtle vanillin oak in the background adds complexity and depth to the overall impression. Fruit filled, dry and medium bodied to taste, freshly cut orchard fruit and melon flavours lead to a generous and creamy middle palate, textured, structured and fine, resolving on a persistent, clean and lingering finish.

Swings & Roundabouts is based in the Margaret River region, the cellar door and home vineyard is at 2807 Caves Rd, Yallingup

The estate produces pure Margaret River styles and West Australian blends from the Swings vineyard and local shareholder and contract growers. The strong belief is in the northern Margaret River fruit that can develop wines with elegant Mediterranean structure for great drinking, with or without food.

Margaret River’s micro climate is now well recognized as having great advantage for super premium wine crafting, unique soils, warm summers with cooling afternoon sea breezes and wet and cold winters make it grape heaven.

Mark Lane runs the show. He found his way to Margaret River in a roundabout way. For a while he made cheese in Melbourne. No doubt interesting, but why would you do that if you can do this! He gained winemaking apprenticeships in the Yarra Valley with the likes of Tarrawarra and Eyton-on-Yarra before making the trek west to take up the position of Chief Winemaker with Deep Woods and then Flying Fish Cove wines.

Mark Lane and the team are well credentialed, serious winemaking chaps who have, according to wine reviewer Ray Jordan won a “staggering list of awards”. But while stern faced about the wine itself, the rest is pretty relaxed. Margaret River is a cool and casual place to hang out so you’ll find the personalities here very friendly and far from intimidating.

Having developed a reputation as one of Margaret River’s leading winemakers, Mark has pulled together a young and enthusiastic team to establish Swings & Roundabouts…all keen to make a difference. He balances life by cooking, taking his teenage daughter to local concerts and driving fast cars fast. He enjoys a complete lack of interest in football (astonishing for a Victorian!) and music makes him happy (so the t-shirt says).

The estate's winemaking operation is also home, and it's been equipped with all that is important to the winemakers. A wood fire pizza oven, a serious coffee machine, lots of comfy leather sofas…and of course the wines. The vine-shaded verandah helps escape those hot summer days, with view over rolling hills, vines and kangaroos.
