Geoff Hardy's family have been making Australian wine since 1857. Geoff grew up amongst the most distinguished vineyards in our land and he knows from good red wine. He retains access to the finest fruit in McLaren Vale and is the man behind many of our nation's most memorable vintages. Undercover is a moniker that Geoff has assigned to a collation of exceptional parcels, albeit bottled behind an abstruse label to secrete the provenance of a spectacular Shiraz. Gold Medal Winner & Best Value at the hotly contested 2016 China Wine & Spirit Awards, the pick of crop this week, seriously.. Sound shiraz for the savvy & shrewd»
Johann Gottfried Scholz served in the Prussian army as a battlefield bonesetter, before joining the great emigration of Lutherans from Silesia to Barossa Valley. After building a family homestead along the alluvial banks of Para River, Gottfried established a mixed farm of livestock and crops, fruit trees and grapevines, Semillon and Shiraz. His acumen at healing fractures and setting splints made Gottfried a leading local identity, as his homestead cottage evolved into the Barossa's very first private hospital. Over a century later, the exceptional quality of harvest from Gottfried's original homestead, made the fruit of Willows Vineyard, an essential.. Savour the shiraz by scholz»
Xavier Bizot can make wine anywhere he pleases, he is a Bollinger and grew up amongst the Vignobles Superieurs of Champagne. Bizot has chosen to make wine alongside Brian Croser's family, from grapes harvested off three magnificent sites, on two paradoxically varied terrains. Planted to the salubrious Terra rosa soils atop an invaluable archeological dig at Wrattonbully, rich with the undisturbed fossils of ancient Cenozoic sea animals, Crayeres Vineyard was established right across the road from Tapanappa's illustrious Whalebone. The weather here is astonishingly similar to Bordeaux and makes an awesome Cabernet Franc. Xavier Bizot and Lucy Croser are also.. The twin tales of terre a terre»
Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Paul Jaboulet's Cotes du Rhone vineyards are holistically managed to a timeless viticulture, artificial pesticides and fertilizers are strictly avoided. Careful work is carried out to ventilate the grapes by thinning out bunches and leaves, for optimal exposure to the sun and to ensure that vines remain in perfect health. Each block of vine is selectively picked according to a timetable dictated by complete ripeness. Harvests of Grenache and Syrah are sourced off mature vines averaging twenty five years of age, planted to a mixture of shingle clay, stony argillaceous and limestone pebble soil. Fruit is treated to a traditional vinification and course of extended macerations in temperature controlled fermenters.
Deep colour, dark purple red hue. Elegant and aromatic nose, savoury red and black fruit fragrances seasoned by spice. A well structured palate supported by well rounded tannins, lovely grainy fruit flavours and mineral textures, bramble berries and currant, fragrant with piquant spice. A wine of generosity and finesse to share with friends and match alongside flavoursome, rustic faire.
